SickRage won’t start on Synology on newest build

Are you using SickRage and wondered why it suddenly stopped working? Here’s how you fix it!

SickRage is a popular fork of SickBeard which is a PVR for newsgroup users. It watches for new episodes of your favorite shows and when they are posted it downloads them, sorts and renames them, and optionally generates metadata for them. It’s an awesome piece of software if you are a TV show addict.

If you don’t change the default settings, SickRage will check for updates and update automatically. Normally this isn’t a problem, but this time a bad commit crashes the package. Even trying to reinstall won’t work because the installer will always try to get the latest code from the repository. Fortunately, Git makes this easy to fix.

Make sure that SSH is enabled (Control Panel->Terminal & SNMP-> Enable SSH service) and connect to your Synology or XPenology server using Putty or a similar.

Execute the following commands, but remember that your paths may differ:

cd /volume1/@appstore/sickbeard/var/SickBeard/

/volume1/@appstore/git/bin/git checkout master
/volume1/@appstore/git/bin/git reset --hard 9226ba5efba

Now restart the package and it should work again as usual. I also recommend to turn of automatic updates while the issue persists. The easiest way to do so is to edit config.ini and set auto_update = 0.

Hi ! thanks a lot for this tutorial and solution. But when i tried to connect with root and my admin’s password i have “access denied”. When i try to connect with admin + admin’s password, i can navigate but not edit or use your solution ==> permission denied.
SSH and telnet are activate… i’m lost !!

You should be able to login with the root user as well. Are you using a real Synology or XPenology? I’m able to login as both root and admin using the “administrator” password. You could also try to use “ls -l” in order to see who own’s the file and try to change the ownership to admin. Hope that helps!

Thanks for your answer. I succeed connecting in root : with DSM 6.0 beta 2 you can’t use root anymore as user.
You have to log in with an administrator account.

Then : sudo -l -U root

And for each command : sudo before the command

By the way , i try your method. i can relaunch sickrage but it shutdown after few minutes 🙁 and when i reboot NAS it didnt work anymore.

I see, I’m still on 5.2, so I’m not familiar with 6.0 yet. Sounds like it’s auto-updating after a few minutes. Make sure that the feature is disabled. Issue the command, go to SickRage and disable auto-update in the general settings. You make have to reset it once more after that, but then it shouldn’t update anymore. 🙂
